Fish Protection Electric Barriers
Electric fish deterrence for hydropower and raw water intakes.
Manufactured by HVEX and offered by Atlas Energy, this electric barrier uses controlled, low-frequency electric fields to discourage fish from entering turbine intakes, suction ducts, and water conveyance systems. The installation is engineered around the target species, intake geometry, and water conditions to support fish protection without a physical screen across the flow path.
An industrial PLC supervises continuous automatic operation. Conductivity and field sensors provide feedback, allowing the control system to adjust the electrical signal as water conditions change. Local operation and remote supervision through Modbus TCP/IP support integration with plant SCADA systems, including operating data, alarm history, and event logs.
Key features
Configurable electrodes for portals, channels, and suction structures.
Two to four electrode rings, selected according to species and duct geometry.
Frequency inverter, sinusoidal filter, and step-up transformer for controlled field generation.
Corrosion-resistant electrode and structural materials for submerged service.
Automatic protection against electrical faults, including short circuits, abnormal voltage, phase loss, and ground faults.
