High Current AC/DC Sources & Thermal Cycling Systems

Programmable high-current testing with integrated thermal monitoring. Atlas Energy supplies HVEX high-current AC or DC systems for temperature-rise tests and repeated heating and cooling cycles. Integrated power equipment, automatic current control, data acquisition, and HVEX Acquisition software support repeatable test programs with recorded voltage, current, specimen temperature, and ambient temperature.

Applications

  • Thermal cycling of circuit breakers and disconnect switches.

  • Temperature-rise testing of cable terminations, joints, conductors, and accessories.

  • Thermal testing of reactors, instrument transformers, panels, reclosers, and substation equipment.

Documented induction-loop configurations

  • Up to 2 kA: 220 V supply and 30 kW frequency inverter.

  • Up to 10 kA: 380 V supply and 75 kW frequency inverter.

  • Capacitor bank: up to 400 kVAr with all stages enabled.

  • 10 kA induction loop: 150 kVA; 380 V primary; 24 V secondary in series or 12 V in parallel.

  • Temperature acquisition: 32 PT100 sensors positioned according to the test program.

  • Current measurement through a Rogowski sensor.

  • Documented operating environment: 0–45 °C (32–113 °F), up to 95% relative humidity without condensation.

Automated control and reporting

The system supports timed tests ranging from short intervals to extended heating and cooling cycles. Programmable current levels and automatic adjustment reduce manual intervention throughout the test. HVEX Acquisition stores equipment records, test history, and measurements for analysis and customized reporting, including PDF reports. A modular PLC coordinates the power and acquisition equipment, with centralized or remote operation according to the supplied configuration.

Configuration and installation

AC and DC solutions are available according to the application. The ratings above describe the induction-loop configurations documented by HVEX; the output type, current, duty cycle, test-loop impedance, temperature profile, and utilities must be specified for each project. The documented 10 kA arrangement uses a 10 m (approximately 32.8 ft) aluminum conductor assembly positioned 0.75 m (approximately 29.5 in) above the floor.

HVEX describes protective relays, audible alarms, access sensors, and automatic grounding among the available system safety features. Applicable test procedures and North American installation requirements should be defined with the project, including any requested IEC or IEEE test program. Contact Atlas Energy with your specimen details and required thermal cycle to configure the HVEX system.
