Multifunction Digital Protection Relays
Feeder, transformer and busbar protection with IEC 61850 GOOSE
One relay should cover the feeder, the transformer and the bus without three different setting philosophies and three different communication stacks. This multifunction digital protection relay does that for 10 kV to 40.5 kV systems, with overcurrent (50/51), earth fault (50N/51N), overvoltage (59), undervoltage (27), over and under frequency (81H/81L) and automatic reclosing (79) in one device.
Analog capacity is 4 current channels and 8 voltage channels, supplied from 24 VDC over a 20 to 29 VDC range, at 50 or 60 Hz. Communications cover Modbus, DNP3.0, IEC 60870-5-101, IEC 60870-5-104 and IEC 61850 GOOSE, so the relay fits a legacy master station and a station bus at the same time. Loop automation, reclosing schemes and programmable interlocking logic run in the relay itself. A higher-I/O variant adds 10 binary inputs and 4 binary outputs, expandable to 20 and 8, plus 28 inverse-time curves and user-defined curves, IEC 61131-3 programmable logic, and a −40 °C to +70 °C operating range.
Why it matters
Horizontal GOOSE messaging between relays gives millisecond self-healing that does not wait on the master station, which is what removes the SCADA round trip from a restoration sequence.
Four current and eight voltage channels cover source- and load-side measurement in one relay instead of two.
Modbus, DNP3.0, IEC 60870-5-101/-104 and IEC 61850 in the same device let a substation retrofit proceed one bay at a time.
The higher-I/O variant carries 28 IDMT curves plus user-defined curves and IEC 61131-3 logic, so an unusual coordination case does not require an external PLC.
A −40 °C to +70 °C range on the higher-I/O variant covers unheated kiosks and pad-mounted enclosures.

Questions engineers ask
Does this relay support IEC 61850 GOOSE between relays?Yes. Horizontal GOOSE messaging runs peer to peer, so relays exchange trip and block signals directly rather than through the master station. That is what makes millisecond self-healing possible on a loop scheme. Modbus, DNP3.0, IEC 60870-5-101 and IEC 60870-5-104 are supported in parallel for the supervisory layer.
How many inputs and outputs are available? The standard relay carries 4 current channels and 8 voltage channels. The higher-I/O variant is configured with 4 current and 6 voltage channels plus 10 binary inputs and 4 binary outputs, expandable to 20 inputs and 8 outputs. That variant also adds IEC 61131-3 programmable logic and 28 inverse-time curves with user-defined curves.
