Recloser Control & Automation Units

Protection, reclosing logic and SCADA in one pole-mounted cabinet

A recloser is only as good as the logic driving it. The control unit decides the shot count, the dead times, when a hot-line tag blocks reclosing, and what the master station hears about any of it. This unit carries that job and the feeder automation layer above it, on the pole, without a cabinet in the substation.

Protection covers instantaneous overcurrent (50), time overcurrent (51), negative-sequence overcurrent (46), directional overcurrent (67), over and under voltage (59/27), earth fault (50N/51N) and sensitive earth fault (64N), with cold-load pickup, hot-line tag and zone-sequence coordination. Ten programmable time-overcurrent curves follow IEEE C37.112-1996. Metering covers phase currents and voltages, frequency, kWh, kvarh, power factor and auxiliary supply voltage. Communications run over RS-232, RS-485 and Ethernet with DNP3.0, Modbus, IEC 60870-5-101 and IEC 60870-5-104, plus a GPRS/LTE modem where there is no fiber to the pole.

Why it matters

  • Ten programmable curves to IEEE C37.112-1996 let you implement the coordination study you already have instead of rebuilding it around the hardware.

  • A 10,000-event sequence of events, with fault and normal-operation records alongside it, turns a post-event argument into a timeline.

  • DNP3.0, Modbus, IEC 60870-5-101 and IEC 60870-5-104 in one unit keep a recloser fleet visible to whichever master station survives the next integration project.

  • Mobile app access over cellular, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth lets a crew locate, set, monitor and control the unit from the ground.

  • Cold-load pickup and zone-sequence coordination are built in, so restoring a cold feeder does not trip the recloser on inrush.

Questions engineers ask

Which SCADA protocols do the recloser control units support? DNP3.0, Modbus, IEC 60870-5-101 and IEC 60870-5-104 are all supported, over RS-232, RS-485 or Ethernet. Where there is no fiber to the pole, a GPRS/LTE modem carries the same protocols. SCADA and DMS master software is available for fleets that need a supervisory layer of their own.

Can settings be changed without taking a laptop to the pole? Yes. A mobile app connects over cellular, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth for unit location, settings, monitoring and control, so a crew can verify a change from the ground. Every action lands in the 10,000-event sequence of events, alongside the fault and normal-operation records, for later review.
