Repetitive Impulse & EMC Generators
Impulse and surge immunity testing where a Marx generator cannot go
Not every impulse test justifies a Marx generator and a shielded hall. A repetitive impulse generator produces the same 1.2/50 µs and 8/20 µs waveshapes in a portable format, which puts dielectric testing and surge immunity work on the factory floor, at the substation, or on a bench next to the product being developed.
The AC source covers 100 VAC to 150 kV AC, and the DC output reaches 100 VDC to 200 kV DC on the divider high side. Waveshaping uses a 300 Ω front resistor with 30 Ω taps in 45 Ω increments, and tail resistors of 5, 10, 50, 70, 115, 300, 400, 500 and 600 Ω, so front and tail are set for the object rather than approximated. Diode rated current is 150 mA. Records go to the LIAS impulse analysis platform, the same evaluation and reporting environment used on the laboratory generators.
Why it matters
A portable format means a field acceptance test does not wait for the object to travel to a laboratory.
1.2/50 µs and 8/20 µs from one unit covers both dielectric impulse work and IEC 61000-4-5 surge immunity.
Discrete front and tail resistor values let you set the waveshape for the object instead of accepting whatever a fixed circuit produces.
Repetitive operation supports endurance and stress testing, where a single shot proves nothing.
The same LIAS analysis platform runs on the laboratory generators, so field and factory records are evaluated the same way.

Questions engineers ask
Can this replace a full impulse voltage generator? For work up to 150 kV AC and 200 kV DC on the divider high side, with 1.2/50 µs and 8/20 µs waveshapes, it does the job in a portable package. Type testing on power transformers, EHV insulators or GIS still needs a multi-stage Marx generator with the stage energy to charge the object.
Which surge immunity standard does it address?IEC 61000-4-5 defines the combination wave surge immunity test, with a 1.2/50 µs open-circuit voltage and an 8/20 µs short-circuit current. Both waveshapes are produced here. IEC 61643-11 testing of low-voltage surge protective devices uses the same generator, and IEC 60060-1 governs the high voltage impulse technique.
